But tonight the identical twins were finally voted out of the ITV talent competition. For seven weeks viewers had tuned in to watch the 18-year-old duo, nicknamed Jedward because of the difficulty in distinguishing one from the other, undergo a weekly ritual in which they were routinely booed by the audience and criticised by the show’s judges for their tuneless annihilation of classic songs.

Children in Need, the BBC's annual telethon, has raised millions of pounds for charity on a fun-filled night.
EastEnders, Strictly Come Dancing and Dragon's Den stars appeared early on the seven-hour show, hosted by Alesha Dixon, Sir Terry Wogan and Tess Daly. Peter Kay joined dozens of children's TV characters to launch the official single and dance group Diversity spiced up the BBC newsreaders' routine. Some £18.8m has already been raised, with the aim to match last year's £38m.
